POLKA CATEGORIES – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

1. What region are the Polka categories dancing?

All Polka categories are classified as:
Polka Norteña – Región Norte (Río Bravo / Zona Fronteriza)

This represents the Northern Mexico / border-region polka tradition.

2. Are the songs Norteña / Polka style?

Yes.

  • Adult Category Song: La Furia del Río Bravo

  • Youth Category Song: La Pequeñita

Both songs fall within the norteña polka tradition and are appropriate for the Región Norte (Río Bravo) classification.

3. Do dancers have to represent a specific state (Chihuahua, Nuevo León, etc.)?

No.
Dancers may represent any traditional northern polka variation appropriate to the Río Bravo / border region, including styles influenced by:

  • Chihuahua

  • Coahuila

  • Nuevo León

  • Tamaulipas

  • Texas border traditions

4. Are specific steps or choreography required?

No specific steps are required.
Choreography should reflect traditional polka norteña movement, energy, rhythm, and musical interpretation appropriate to the region.

5. Is this Polka considered Chihuahua style only?

No.
This is a broader Northern / Border Polka category, not limited to a single state or town.

6. What type of costuming is expected?

Costumes should reflect traditional northern polka aesthetics.

  • Adult groups: traditional norteño polka presentation

  • Youth groups: traditional styling adapted appropriately for age

Exact town-specific costuming is not required.

7. Can we use creative interpretation?

Yes, as long as the choreography, music, and costuming remain true to the Polka Norteña / Región Norte style.

8. Why did the competition choose a border-region classification?

The Río Bravo / Zona Fronteriza classification allows for:

  • Historical accuracy

  • Regional inclusivity

  • Fair judging across different northern polka traditions

This ensures dancers are not penalized for legitimate regional variations.

9. Will judges be informed of this regional classification?

Yes.
Judges will be briefed that Polka entries fall under Polka Norteña, Región Norte (Río Bravo / Zona Fronteriza) and will evaluate accordingly.

10. Will there be multiple rounds?

Yes, the Polka category will consist of two judged rounds.

Round 1 (Preliminary): All registered groups will perform once. Judges’ scores will determine advancement. The top three (3) scoring groups will advance to the Final Round.

Round 2 (Final): The top three (3) groups will perform again. Final placements (1st–3rd) will be determined based on Final Round scores.
